RoHS Compliance
Compliance with the RoHS (Restriction of use of certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive 2002/95/EC
Background
The RoHS directive is a European Union initiative that is aimed at restricting the use of six hazardous materials used in the manufacture of various types of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). Restricting the use of these materials is intended to give health and environmental benefits mainly during the production and end of life stages of the life cycle of electrical and electronic products.
The restricted materials are:
- Lead (Pb)
- Mercury (Hg)
- Cadmium (Cd)
- Hexavalent Chromium (CrVI)
- Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB)
- Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE)
The directive declares that from July 1st 2006, member states of the European Union shall ensure that new electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) put on the market does not contain restricted materials (or the permitted concentrations detailed in the directive).

END USE APPLICATIONS
Aerospace and Defense applications - the industry stance it that the aerospace and defense sectors are exempt from the directive due to:
a) Aviation safety and reliability concerns.
b) National security issues.
and the industry is actively seeking clarification from the European Union.
Non-Aerospace and Defense applications - in all other applications, the directive applies and equipment must comply with the RoHS directive.
